Traditionally known as the Kulla, this particular product is also known as a winnower in English. This is used in a process called winnowing which follows the threshing part of grain preparation, mainly rice. This process is where the chaff and unwanted debris like sand and stone is separated from the grain. This method was used as a traditional method of separating rice from its protective seed casings and is still sometimes used in rural parts of Sri Lanka. However, nowadays many use it as kitchen décor or simply to dry off certain grains and leaves under the natural sun. You can even use it as a serving tray during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year which will be a unique localized concept.
The kulla is made of a combination of bamboo strips and cane to give it a rigid composition. This product is smaller in size and is an eco-friendly, safe and non-toxic product made by highly skilled Sri Lankan artisans who are professionals in the industry.
