International Driving Permit (IDP)

An International Driving Licence (IDL), also known as an International Driving Permit (IDP), is a legal document that translates your national driver’s licence into several languages. Issued by a country's motoring authority or a recognized automobile association, an IDL allows drivers to operate vehicles in foreign countries without having to take additional driving tests or undergo complicated permit procedures. It contains your name, photo, and driver information, and must always be carried alongside your original driver’s licence when driving abroad.

The IDL is recognized under the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic and the 1968 Vienna Convention, depending on the issuing country and the destination country. It’s typically valid for one year and covers several vehicle categories, such as cars and motorcycles, but not commercial vehicles. While it is not a standalone document, it facilitates driving across borders where language differences could otherwise pose challenges in verifying a domestic licence.

In the case of Sri Lanka, foreign nationals holding a valid International Driving Licence can legally drive in the country, but there are specific steps that must be followed. Even with an IDL, drivers must obtain endorsement from the Automobile Association of Ceylon (AAC) or the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) in Sri Lanka. This endorsement acts as local validation of the international permit and is mandatory to drive legally on Sri Lankan roads. The IDL with the appropriate endorsement can then be used to rent cars, scooters, or motorcycles during your stay.

Using an IDL in Sri Lanka is especially useful for tourists planning road trips or exploring the island independently. It ensures smoother communication with authorities and rental agencies and provides an extra layer of credibility and legal safety. However, visitors should also familiarize themselves with local road rules and driving etiquette, as traffic patterns and regulations in Sri Lanka may differ significantly from those in their home country.
